Lebanon Strengthens Its Role as a Biodiversity Reservoir: “Akkar Iris Trail Garden” A Pioneering Initiative to Protect Endangered Species
Akkar – Lebanon

In a landscape that reflects Lebanon’s exceptional natural wealth, the country stands out as one of the region’s leading biodiversity hotspots, hosting more than 2,600 species of wildflowers, including 92 endemic species found nowhere else in the world. This unique diversity constitutes a cornerstone of ecological systems and underscores Lebanon’s critical role as a biological corridor for environmental balance in the Mediterranean basin.

Within this context, the “Akkar Iris Trail Garden” emerges as a pioneering environmental and scientific initiative aimed at conserving one of the most distinctive and rare plant genera: the iris, particularly endangered species. The project aspires to position Akkar as the “Iris Capital” of the Middle East by collecting, preserving, and propagating rare species within a sustainable and protective habitat.

In a short documentary highlighting the project, forest management expert Mr. Khaled Taleb explains that the garden is the result of seven years of continuous effort. During this period, the team successfully collected 25 of the rarest iris species, sourced from seven different countries. This achievement represents a significant advancement in plant conservation, especially as many of these species face the risk of extinction due to climate change, habitat loss, and increasing anthropogenic pressures.

The garden is particularly distinguished by hosting species from the Oncocyclus group—one of the rarest iris groups globally, comprising approximately 44 primary species worldwide. These irises are renowned for their striking colors and intricate patterns, making them true biological treasures. Their high sensitivity to environmental conditions further amplifies the importance of conservation efforts dedicated to their protection.

Taleb emphasizes that the project extends beyond its aesthetic and touristic value, serving as a living scientific platform for research and study, while also fostering environmental awareness among local communities. Additionally, it contributes to the development of sustainable ecotourism in Akkar.

This initiative is expected to further elevate Lebanon’s position on the global environmental map, particularly in light of international commitments to protect 30% of land areas by 2030. The conservation of rare plant species remains a fundamental component of these global efforts.

Conclusion:
At a time when biodiversity loss is accelerating worldwide, Lebanon offers a promising model through pioneering local initiatives that demonstrate that investing in nature is not a luxury, but a necessity for safeguarding the future. The “Akkar Iris Trail Garden” is more than a green space—it is a scientific and environmental message affirming that preserving natural beauty begins with understanding and protecting it.
