With profound sorrow and deep respect, the IUCN Members’ Network – Lebanon mourns the passing of renowned environmental activist Mona Khalil, who succumbed to injuries sustained following the bombing of her home in the coastal town of Mansouri, South Lebanon. Her passing marks the loss of one of the region’s most dedicated conservation champions, whose life was devoted to protecting sea turtles, preserving coastal biodiversity, and inspiring generations of environmental stewards.

Mona Khalil was far more than an environmental activist. She was a visionary conservationist, a courageous advocate for nature, and a symbol of unwavering commitment to the protection of life in all its forms. At a time when few recognized the importance of marine conservation and biodiversity protection, she stood at the forefront, dedicating her life to safeguarding endangered sea turtles and preserving one of the Mediterranean’s most significant nesting sites.

For decades, Mansouri Beach became synonymous with Mona Khalil’s tireless efforts. Through determination, resilience, and an unshakable belief in the value of every living creature, she transformed a stretch of coastline into a beacon of hope for marine conservation. Her work extended beyond species protection; it fostered environmental awareness, strengthened community engagement, and demonstrated how one individual’s conviction can inspire meaningful and lasting change.

Mona’s legacy is measured not only by the thousands of sea turtles that found refuge under her watchful care, but also by the countless young conservationists, researchers, volunteers, and environmental leaders who drew inspiration from her example. She taught us that conservation is not merely a profession or a cause—it is a lifelong commitment rooted in compassion, perseverance, and responsibility toward future generations.

Commenting on this profound loss, Fadi Ghanem, Coordinator of the IUCN Members’ Network – Lebanon, stated:

“Today, the environmental community in Lebanon and far beyond has lost one of its brightest lights. Mona Khalil was a pioneer, a mentor, and a relentless defender of nature. She dedicated her life to protecting species that could not speak for themselves and ecosystems that depended on human stewardship for survival. Her courage, humility, and determination inspired everyone who had the privilege of working alongside her. While her passing leaves a deep void, her legacy will continue to live on through every conservation initiative, every young environmental advocate she inspired, and every sea turtle that returns safely to the shores she worked so hard to protect. The greatest tribute we can offer Mona is to carry forward her mission and remain steadfast in our commitment to safeguarding nature.”

For his part, Assaad Serhal, Director General of the Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL) and Regional Representative of BirdLife International in the Middle East, said:

“Mona Khalil belonged to that rare group of individuals whose impact transcends place and time. She was not simply an environmental activist; she was a guardian of nature in the truest sense of the word. Through her dedication and perseverance, she transformed Mansouri into an internationally recognized sanctuary for endangered sea turtles and a model for community-based conservation. She reminded us that meaningful conservation begins with love—for nature, for wildlife, and for future generations. Her loss is deeply felt across the conservation community, yet her work and values will continue to guide and inspire us. Her story stands as a powerful testament to what one determined individual can achieve in service of the natural world.”

The IUCN Members’ Network – Lebanon emphasized that Mona Khalil’s passing represents a profound loss not only for Lebanon’s environmental movement but also for the broader regional and international conservation community. Her life’s work demonstrated the transformative power of individual commitment and highlighted the critical role of local leadership in achieving global conservation goals.

The Network further noted that Mona leaves behind more than successful conservation programs and protected nesting grounds. She leaves a lasting legacy of courage, integrity, compassion, and hope—a legacy that will continue to inspire environmental action and strengthen efforts to protect biodiversity across Lebanon and beyond.

In its concluding tribute, the Network stated:

“Though Mona Khalil is no longer with us, her spirit will remain present in the sands of Mansouri, in the waves of the Mediterranean, and in the hearts of all who knew her, worked alongside her, or were inspired by her extraordinary journey. Her life reminds us that conservation is ultimately an act of love, responsibility, and faith in a better future. We honor her memory by renewing our commitment to the values she embodied and the mission she championed throughout her life.”

May Mona Khalil rest in peace. Her legacy will continue to illuminate the path for all those dedicated to protecting nature, conserving biodiversity, and building a more sustainable world for generations to come.
